Cochran garners her first NEC Rookie of the Week after tallying 42 kills (2.8 per set) and 45 digs (3.0 per set) to lead the Central Connecticut State University volleyball team to a 3-1 record this week. The Iowa native tallied a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs in the Blue Devils' victory over Binghamton on Saturday. She was named to the all-tournament team for her performances against the Bearcats and the host Bulldogs at the Yale Invitational over the weekend. Against Yale Cochran recorded six kills and chipped in 11 digs. This is the first weekly honor for any CCSU player this season.

Making History: CCSU Junior Kaitlin Petrella (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) came into Saturday's match against Binghamton with 1,115 digs in her two-and-a-half year career. With her second dig, coming in the second set of the match, the Stratford, CT native passed former Blue Devil Chantelle Bowden for second place in Central annals for digs in a career. With 14 more in the match versus the Bearcats, and 13 on the road against Quinnipiac, she currently has 1,184 and is 31 away from becoming the all-time CCSU digs leader. St. Francis (NY) snapped their 43-match losing streak after sweeping Coppin State on Saturday in the Providence Tournament. Their last win came on Nov. 3, 2007 against Quinnipiac. Firsts: Bryant earned its first two home wins of the 2009 season over Brown and Coppin State. Robert Morris competed in its first five-set match this season against Illinois-Chicago where they lost 2-3. SFNY head coach Lucy Liriano recorded her first career victory against Coppin State. Highs: BU’s Robyn Gardner (Longwood, FL/ Lake Brantley) takes her place in the NEC match-highs list for recording 33 digs vs. Coppin State Sept. 27, also a career-high for the junior. RMU sophomore Hannah Veith (Columbus, OH/Worthington) recorded a career-high 16 kills on a season-high hitting percentage of .538 in a loss to Illinois-Chicago.Conference Contests: Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut faced each other twice last week with CCSU coming out on top both times by 3-1 margins. SFNY is the only other team who has competed in conference action so far this season where they dropped an 0-3 decision to QU two weeks ago. The next slated NEC match pits QU against Long Island on Oct. 1 for the Blackbirds’ conference opener. Tournament Time: The 2009 NEC Women’s Volleyball Championship will be held on November 22 & 22 at the home of the high seed. The top four teams in the regular season will advance to the single elimination tournament. The winner of the NEC Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Team-by-Team Notes:
Bryant (5-11, 0-0 NEC)
Bryant earned its first two home wins of the 2009 season in a 2-2 week taking victories over Brown and Coppin State. The Bulldogs hosted the Bryant Invitational over the weekend going 2-1 with sophomore star Maria Scocca (Melrose, MA/Arlington Catholic) and senior captain Julie Geonnotti (Eden Prairie, MI/Benilde-St. Margaret's) earning all-tournament team selections. Geonnotti, who split time at setter and outside hitter after a Bryant injury, was named the tournament MVP. On the week, the Bulldogs were led by 54 kills and 24 blocks (5 solo, 19 assists) from Scocca who hit at a .395 clip. The sophomore averaged 4.70 points/set and 3.60 kills/set while collecting three double-digit kill matches and a double-double (18 kills, 11 blocks) vs. Brown. Geonnotti registered her own double-double against the Bears (14 kills, 10 digs) and collected 32 kills and 49 assists on the four-match week. Junior libero Robyn Gardner (Longwood, FL/ Lake Brantley) collected a career-high 33 digs in a 3-0 win over Coppin State Sunday as she registered 86 digs (5.73 d/s) with five aces and a .953 reception percentage in four matches. Senior Adriana Fuertes (Miramar, Puerto Rico/Academia del Perpetuo Socorro) collected 92 assists on the week also chipping in three aces. Bryant faces Central Connecticut State on their home court for the first conference match of the season on Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
Central Connecticut (6-8, 2-0 NEC)
CCSU had a bounce back week finishing 3-1 to improve to 6-8 on the season. The Blue Devils got off to a great start in the Northeast Conference as they won their first two league matches defeating Quinnipiac by a score of 3-1 twice. CCSU also defeated Binghamton 3-2 but lost to Yale 0-3. Senior captain Jamie Baumert (Elkhorn, NE/Elkhorn) recorded 43 kills (2.69/set) in the four matches. Baumert led CCSU in kills in two out of the three wins this week. She tallied 13 to lead Central over Quinnipiac at home and then recorded 15 kills in the Blue Devils' road victory over the Bobcats. The Elkhorn, NE native improved on her Northeast Conference leading hitting percentage as she recorded a mark of .469 over the week. Baumert added an astounding 23 blocks during the 3-1 week for CCSU. She now has 64 on the season. Emily Cochran (Adel, IA/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) recorded 42 kills and 45 digs during the week. The freshman tallied a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs in the Blue Devils' 3-2 victory over Binghamton on Saturday. She was named to the all-Tournament team for her performances against the Bearcats and the host Bulldogs at the Yale Invitational over the weekend. Fairleigh Dickinson (3-13, 0-0 NEC)
The Knights competed once this week dropping a 3-1 match to St. Peter's in their home opener on Wednesday night. Freshman Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) led the Knights with 22 kills and four aces adding 25 digs. Sophomore Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) dished out 34 assists and chipped in 16 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) recorded a team-high 31 digs while senior Ali Philbrick (Lanham, MD/Elizabeth Seton) added 14. After falling in a close first set, the Knights won the second set. St. Peter's bounced back to take the next two sets to win the match. The Knights are now 3-13 on the season. FDU opens conference play on Friday evening when they host Sacred Heart.
Long Island (3-11, 0-0 NEC)
Long Island played just once last week falling to St. John's in five sets. After winning the first two sets, the Blackbirds saw St. John's break a late tie in the third frame and turn the tables to take away a victory. The 2-3 loss dropped the Blackbirds to 3-11 on the season and was the fifth in a row. Senior Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia/Commercial School) led four LIU players in double figures with 21 kills. Junior Zuzana Buchlova (Pelhrmov, Czech Republic) tallied 14 kills while freshman Breanna Cullity (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 12, and senior Martina Racic (Pula, Croatia/School of Arts) chimed in with 11. Simic closed with 17 digs and sophomore Chelsey Stanton (Macungie, Pa.) had 13. Stony Brook travels to LIU Sept. 29 where the first ball will be served at 6:00 p.m.
Quinnipiac (1-14, 1-2 NEC)
The Bobcats went 0-4 on the week including a pair of 3-1 losses to intrastate NEC foe Central Connecticut State. Quinnipiac also fell to another intrastate foe, Yale, by a 3-0 margin Saturday in New Haven, while also falling 3-1 in a home contest against Binghamton on Sunday. SophomoreKelby Carey (Surfside, CA/Los Alamitos) led the Bobcats with 48 kills and 50 digs on the week including three consecutive double-doubles in Quinnipiac's first three matches. Classmate Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch) finished the week with 42 kills while hitting a team-best .310 and contributing a team-high nine blocks. Sophomore Kayla Lawler (Richmond, IN/Centerville) had 126 assists, while rookie Logan Riker (Bowling Green, OH/) chipped in a team-high 70 digs. Freshman Chelsey Pachoud (Riverview, FL/Riverview) also had a strong week with 35 kills and 42 digs. The Bobcats return to Northeast Conference action Thursday when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Long Island.
Robert Morris (3-13, 0-0 NEC)
The Colonials suffered a 0-3 loss to Loyola-Chicago and a 2-3 loss to Illinois-Chicago this past weekend. With the two losses RMU dropped its record to 3-13 and is currently suffering a 12-game losing streak. The squad competed in its first five-set match this season against Illinois-Chicago. Sophomore Hannah Veith (Columbus, OH/Worthington) recorded a career-high 16 kills on a season-high hitting percentage of .538 while also adding six blocks. Sophomore Alyssa Bennett(Ramona, CA/Ramona) tallied a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs also adding two service aces and seven kills. Junior Amanda Graham recorded a match-high three service aces and added 10 kills and four blocks. Freshman Amanda Craig also tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs while junior Corinne Moser (Meyersdale, PA/Meyersdale) led the team with 17 digs. The Colonials start up conference play next weekend against Saint Francis (PA) on Friday, Oct. 2 and Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Sacred Heart (9-6, 0-0 NEC)
The Pioneers extended their win streak to three matches with a pair of victories at Maryland-Eastern Shore as they continued a 12-match road trip that runs through Oct. 11. Senior Annie Archer (Littleton, CO/Littleton) led the squad in a 3-0 win over Norfolk State, hitting .643 with nine kills and no errors in 14 total attacks. Sophomore Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks) led SHU with ten kills in the win over UMES. Freshman Elise Sage (Aurora, CO/Cherry Creek), who leads the Pioneers in hitting percentage this season, also had a strong game against the Hawks with five kills and just one error in 13 attempts. The Pioneers will open up Northeast Conference play this Friday at Fairleigh Dickinson.
St. Francis (NY) (1-9, 0-1 NEC)
St. Francis (NY) snapped their 43-match losing streak after sweeping Coppin State on Saturday in the Providence Tournament. Their last win came on Nov. 3, 2007 against Quinnipiac. It was the first career victory for head coach Lucy Liriano. Junior Anisa Lila (Thessaloniki, Greece/Palm Beach CC) earned all-Tournament honors after coming up with a double-double on 13 kills and 10 digs in the victory against Coppin. Liliana Rodriguez (Linden, NJ/Linden) added 17 digs and junior Gina Giles (Brooklyn, NY/Beach Channel HS/Globe Institute of Technology) recorded 6 kills and a team-high 4 blocks in the victory. The Terriers also fell to Providence and New Hampshire in the tournament. Senior Detelina Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Jacksonville University) and junior Thalita Paladino (Boca Raton/Boca Raton C.C.) returned to action this past week for the first time this season after recuperating from leg injuries. Dimitrova led the Terriers with 9 kills in the loss to Quinnipiac and also had 7 kills against Providence and New Hampshire. Rodriguez averaged 5.07 digs per game this past week. The Terriers will host Providence on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. and will play LIU back-to-back on Friday and Sunday first away then at home.
Saint Francis (PA) (2-13, 0-0 NEC)
SFPA played in the Holiday Inn HD tournament this past weekend hosted by Penn. The Red Flash dropped all three matches at the tournament by 0-3 scores. They have played 14 of 16 road matches in their first 17 total contests. The combined winning percentage of Red Flash opponents is .579 as of Sept. 22. SFPA will travel to Delaware State Sept. 29 to face the Hornets a second time this season after losing the first contest 1-3 with home court advantage.
