TOP-SEEDED VCU ROLLS INTO THE CAA TITLE MATCH WITH 3-0 WIN OVER NO. 4 WILLIAM & MARY
RICHMOND, Va. (November 23, 2009) – Top-seeded VCU captured a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded William & Mary in the CAA Volleyball semifinal nightcap on Monday evening. The Rams will face third-seeded George Mason at 7 p.m. in the title match on Tuesday evening.
The Rams (25-8) were led by CAA Rookie of the Year Michala Kvapilova’s 15 kills and four blocks. VCU also received a strong performance from senior middle blocker Ivana Rich as she recorded 13 kills on 20 attacks with just two errors for a match-high .550 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter/middle blocker Mariel Frey posted a team-high 16 digs and sophomore Alyssa Foster contributed 11. Junior setter Lenka Melicharkova dished out a match-high 36 assists.
William & Mary (18-10) was guided by Lauren Powell’s team-high 12 kills. Senior libero Lindsey Pflugner, CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year, posted a match-high 19 digs, while Powell added 10 to finish with a double-double. Junior setter Cassie Crumal handed out 23 assists for the Tribe.
VCU took the first set down to the wire as they defeated William & Mary, 27-25. Rich helped the Rams in the win tallying seven kills on .455 hitting. Kvapilova and Frey contributed five kills apiece and Frey also added a set-high 11 digs. Melicharkova dished out 16 assists. For the Tribe, Kresch and Powell split eight kills, while Pflugner recorded nine digs.
The Rams went up two sets to none with a 25-17 win in the second set. Kvapilova tabbed a set-high six kills on a .500 attack percentage, while Low recorded a team-high five digs and Frey added four digs for VCU. Melicharkova dished out 10 assists in the set. Powell’s three kills and five digs led the Tribe in the second stanza.
The Tribe battled back with a 9-1 run to take the lead, 24-23, before VCU scored the final three points to take the third and final set, 26-24. Kvapilova tabbed four kills for the Rams, while Rich added three kills. Foster contributed a team-high four digs in the set, while Kvapilova and Kelsie Clegg each recorded a pair of blocks for VCU. Powell paced the Tribe’s run with a set-high five kills and Pflugner tabbed a set-high six digs in the loss.
