UK Volleyball: Volleyball Spring Schedule Kicks Off with Dayton
Home matchup with the Flyers is a part of the 2011 UK Coaches Clinic
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following an unprecedented sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in December the Kentucky volleyball team is set to return to action with its spring schedule which features four weekends of play. UK will first take the floor against Dayton to wrap-up the 2011 Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Clinic March 25-26.
Kentucky and the Flyers will compete in a live interactive offensive and defensive coaching situation session with coaches Craig Skinner and Dayton’s Kelly Sheffield during the final coaching session on March 26.
“We are excited about this spring,” Skinner said. “It will be about evolving and preparing this team for the fall. There is no question this type of competition will help us improve over the next few weeks.”
UK will appear in the KIVA Club College Tournament April 2 to begin live-match competition. Similar to last year’s tournament, the Wildcats will play at least three teams that Saturday in Louisville.
On April 9 the Blue and White will travel north to Columbus, Ohio, for a match with Ohio State. Kentucky and the Buckeyes played a memorable match during the 2010 fall season in which the Wildcats prevailed in four sets of action.
Finally, to wrap-up spring action Kentucky will travel to Muncie, Ind., for a three-team tournament. UK will play the host Ball State Cardinals and Purdue on April 16. The Boilermakers advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Kentucky is one of just 18 teams in the nation to appear in six consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Under Skinner’s direction, the Wildcats have charted 17 or more victories for six straight seasons which is more than any other run in school history.
The Wildcats return the Southeastern Conference Libero of the Year in Stephanie Klefot and sophomore Whitney Billings a 2010 All-SEC Freshman team member. Five starters from a season ago return, and junior transfer Ashley Frazier will join the squad this spring for competition.
UK’s coaching clinic is set to feature the UK volleyball coaching staff, USA Youth National Team coach Jim Miret, Gwen Egbert who coached a 41-0 squad to the Nebraska high school state title in 2010 and Mike Lingenfelter the co-director of Munciana Volleyball Club.
Sessions will include setter training concepts, serving, warm-up strategies, efficient practices and systematic play.

Volleyball Hosts UCF Spring Fling to Benefit the Central Florida Children’s Home
All proceeds donated
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – In its opening weekend of non-traditional competition, the UCF volleyball team is set to host its premier event of the spring, the UCF Spring Fling, Saturday at The Venue at UCF. Admission to the event is $5, with all proceeds benefitting the Central Florida Children’s Home.
Besides the Knights, 14 additional teams will be participating in Saturday’s event, including 2010 NCAA Tournament participants Florida, Florida State, Auburn, Miami and Georgia Southern.
“We are excited to have doubled the size of this event and significantly improved the competitive level,” UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. “It will benefit our student-athletes to play this high level of competition to prepare for the fall 2011 season. It should be very exciting for our fans and the central Florida volleyball community to watch many nationally-elite athletes play.”
The Knights will play back-to-back matches vs. Auburn and Florida at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively, to open the day, and will also face off with Rollins at 1 p.m. Following an hour break, UCF will take on Miami at 3 p.m., before closing out the tournament with a 6 p.m. contest vs. Flagler. All of UCF’s matches will be played on the main court.
“Our primary goals for this tournament are to experiment with different lineups and different offensive and defensive schemes,” Dagenais said. “Some of which are part of our normal packages and some of which are new creations we are looking to implement.”
The Black and Gold has made the UCF Spring Fling an annual event following its inaugural success in 2010. Last spring the Knights raised $540 dollars through entry fees and admission to the event and donated all proceeds to the Central Florida Children’s Home.
UCF will also welcome the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials (PAVO) to the tournament for the second-straight year. The PAVO will once again hold its refereeing clinic at The Venue at UCF, while adding a line judge clinic and a scorekeepers clinic to its agenda as well.
In the fall, the Black and Gold posted its best record since 2003 with a 16-16 overall mark and also tallied a program-best nine wins in Conference USA action and have high expectations for its spring season heading into the 2011 fall campaign.
After three seasons of being the league’s youngest and most inexperienced team in terms of matches started per player, the Knights look to return up to six of their seven starters from last season's team, including middle blockers Nichole Riedel (Denver, Colo.) and Tory McCutcheon (Milton, Ont.), outside hitter Angelica Crump (Atlanta, Ga.), setter Rachel Vukson (Oakville, Ont.), right side hitter Evija Vilde (Riga, Latvia) and libero Meredith Murphy (Austin, Texas).

Wildcats finished spring slate at home against stiff competition
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky coach Craig Skinner and the Kentucky volleyball team have never shied away from challenging spring schedules and the 2010 spring was no different. The Wildcats set out over a month ago to face a number of top-25 programs to continue to test the team in its quest to continue to rise among the ranks of elite programs in the country.
Saturday in Memorial Coliseum the Wildcats concluded its spring slate with Atlantic Coast Conference member Georgia Tech and Big 10 member Purdue.
The three squads were all NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago and have promising outlooks for the 2010 fall campaign. Kentucky earned a win over Georgia Tech, while falling to Purdue in four close sets.

The Yellow Jackets opened up with a 25-23 set one victory, but UK roared back for a 25-21 set two win to even the match. Georgia Tech took the lead with a 25-16 win in the third frame, but it was all Kentucky from there. UK forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-20 fourth set victory. In the decisive fifth set, UK claimed a 15-10 win.
UK faced Purdue in the final match of the day. The Boilermakers opened competition with a 25-18 first set win. UK claimed the second set with a 25-23 score. In a competitive third set, Purdue edged the Wildcats by a 28-26 margin and then claimed the match with a fourth set 25-21 win.

The Wildcats will open the 2010 fall campaign as a part of the Runza/AVCA Showcase in Lincoln, Neb., Aug. 27-28. UK will be a part of a four-team showcase to open the 2010 season along with Nebraska, Iowa State and Florida. LSU Volleyball Team Concludes Spring on Strong Note
BATON ROUGE –
The LSU volleyball team recorded a trio of two-set sweeps over South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Miss to wrap up its spring season Saturday at the Maravich Center Auxiliary Gym.
The defending SEC champions also claimed the league’s beach tournament earlier in the spring.
“This was an outstanding way to finish our spring season,” head coach Fran Flory said. “Every aspect of our team seemed to come together at the same time which made us very efficient and very successful. Every player made significant improvement over the course of the semester. We are very excited as a group about what we accomplished this semester. At the same time, we also understand this is a starting point for our fall season, not an ending point.”
LSU put together an impressive 25-7 record in 2009 en route to the program's first SEC regular season title since 1991. Under Flory, the defending five-time SEC Western Division champions are one of only 20 programs in the nation to appear in the last five NCAA Tournaments.
Samford University Volleyball Team Finishes Off Competitive Spring Season
sans-serif;">
--- Additions to already talented squad and spring work look to continue Samford’s success ---
April 26, 2010
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team closed out spring competition Saturday in a tournament in Oxford, Miss., hosted by Ole Miss. The Bulldogs started out the season at a tournament at Alabama before heading to Ohio to play at the Ohio Valley Volleyball Center.
“It was an up and down spring,” Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. “We had some low points and definitely lost matches to some teams where I was disappointed with the effort. During the high points though we were playing legitimate high-end Division I volleyball and hanging with or beating some very good teams.”
Schroeder took a very young team of two seniors, a red-shirt junior and eight freshmen to three spring tournaments over the last two months to get a little competition in against some very good teams. The focus was on getting the young student-athletes to play up to their athletic potential and learn how to play composed while staying focused on every point of every match. Schroeder said his team is becoming more disciplined and efficient in the Bulldogs’ defensive system.
“Our ball control kids matured into excellent and well-rounded defensive players,” Schroeder said. “We were very undisciplined and made plays on effort alone. Sam (Bland) and Lexi (Bauer) have developed into players that can make defensive plays because of our system, their discipline and a high volleyball I.Q.”
Some highlights from the Bulldogs’ spring play included taking on some tough SEC competition at two of the three tournaments. Samford defeated Mississippi State twice, beat Ole Miss and split a pair of matches with Alabama.
The emergence of freshman Elizabeth Neisler and transfer Lauren Hutchinson as high-end offensive weapons was also a bright spot in Samford’s spring play.
“Elizabeth and Lauren both jump so high and are so long that their potential at the net is phenomenal,” Schroeder said. “Both of them took great strides this spring, becoming long and tall weapons for our offense. I definitely feel that Neisler was the most improved kid in our gym this spring season.”
The 2010 edition of the Samford volleyball team returns all but one player from last season’s roster aside from the three seniors who graduated. It will also add two incoming freshmen, Taylor Palmer (Jacksonville, Ala.) and Katie Murphy (Sterling Heights, Mich.), along with transfer Hutchinson.
The Bulldogs will open the 2010 season in a tournament at the University of Arkansas August 27-28.

The Bears are have won 11 of 15 sets played during three tournament so far this spring, after losing three seniors from last year’s team and adding one mid-year transfer.
“This is definitely the hardest working team I have coached,” head coach Jim Barnes said. “We have made a lot of big strides this spring in filling the void left by our three seniors. Right now, it’s about this team finding its own identity, and that has been that they are willing to work hard.”
Baylor is coming off one of the most historic seasons in program history with its first ever trip to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament and a 24-10 overall record. The Bears finished the regular season with an 11-9 record in Big 12 play, the second-best mark in program history.
