Denver Volleyball Women Down New Orleans 3-1 in SBC Action
Win gives Pioneers sole possession of first place in the West Division with four matches remaining
DENVER, Colo. – Paced by senior Emmy Davidsmeyer’s (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 22 kills, the University of Denver volleyball team (14-14, 9-5 SBC) downed visiting New Orleans (15-11, 8-6 SBC) 3-1 on Thursday evening in Hamilton Gymnasium. The win puts the Pioneers on top of the Sun Belt Conference West Division standings with four matches remaining.
“It was a great team effort tonight,” said head coach Beth Kuwata. “Our hitters really stepped up tonight and made the necessary plays that helped us pull out a great win. We were limited with our number of substitutions so it was critical that we play well and keep our errors to a minimum, which I think is something that we did tonight.”
To go along with Davidsmeyer’s 22 kills, senior Alexis Ninos (Cypress, Texas) added 13 kills, while freshman Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 12 kills and a .450 hitting percentage. Returning to the setter position, junior Kresson Vreeman (Raymond, Minn.) finished the night with 47 assists, four kills, eight digs and two blocks.
Defensively, libero Kacie Wikierak (Crystal Lake, Ill.) turned in an impressive 22-dig effort, while Ninos added 11.
Lindsey Loyd led the Privateers with 18 kills, while Maria Szivos finished with 12. Splitting the setter duties, Cassidy Asebroek tallied 35 assists, while Hajnalka Molnar added 17.
Denver remains at home for the rest of the weekend, hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium.
Prior to the start of their match against the Ragin Cajuns on Saturday, the Pioneers will honor its three seniors, Davidsmeyer, Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) and Ninos with a pre-match ceremony. Huskies Volleyball Team Comes Up Short, Fall To Western Michigan In Four Sets
Kristin Hoffman leads NIU with 52 assists, 15 digs and six kills
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Northern Illinois volleyball team fell to Western Michigan in four sets on Thursday night at University Arena in a Mid-American Conference match despite the fact that the Huskies (13-13, 7-6 MAC) out-killed the Broncos (19-9, 11-2 MAC) 64-56 and out-hit them .233 to .208.
“I thought we came out with a lot of fire and energy and really put them under pressure in the first set,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. “Unfortunately, we just couldn’t make plays at the end. They are a very good team.”
NIU jumped out to a fast start by claiming a 25-16 win in the first set, as the Huskies scored the first six points of the match and never looked back in the initial stanza.
In the second set, Western Michigan got off to a quick start, opening a 6-1 lead after a Huskie attack error. NIU would later tie it, 7-7, and remained close throughout the entire set, but the Broncos were still able to finish the set. With the score in favor of WMU, 20-19, the Broncos ran off four straight points to help them hold off a late surge by NIU and even the match after a 25-22 win.
In the pivotal swing set, the Huskies once again had a nice start, as they scored the first four points and held that lead until WMU went on a furious run with NIU ahead, 22-18. Ashley Turnage started the run with a kill and Jessica Brown followed with a kill of her own. Then back-to-back attack errors by NIU senior Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and sophomore Allison McGlaughlin (Morton, Ill./Morton) knotted the game and forced NIU to take a timeout.
“Throughout the match we did a good job of not relying on any one person to make plays,” Gooden said. “We did not do a good job of doing that in sets three and four, which isn’t our way of being successful against a really good team.”
After the break, Schoenrock put the Huskies up 23-22 with a kill, but WMU’s Katie Eberling matched with two straight kills. Then Allyson Doyle notched an ace on the next play to give the Broncos the 25-23 win, and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Huskies then recovered from a 12-6 deficit in the fourth set to tie the score, 18-18, after a Bronco serve error, but could not get over the hump, as WMU ended the set, 25-20, on a 7-2 run.
Sophomore Kristin Hoffman (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) led NIU with 52 assists, 15 digs, six kills and an ace. Schoenrock totaled a team-high 20 kills and McGlaughlin had 17, along with 20 digs.
On defense, junior Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill./North) led the Huskies with 29 digs, while freshman Sue Hayes (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) had 11.
“I thought Maddie did a really good job of playing defense tonight,” added Gooden.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. (CDT) match on the road against Bowling Green. Live stats can be followed onbgsufalcons.com.

UCA SWEEPS MCNEESE, ONE WIN AWAY FROM SOUTHLAND TITLE
CONWAY, Ark - The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team set several school records Thursday night as they swept McNeese State in front of 343 fans at the Prince Center. The Sugar Bears defeated the Cowgirls 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 to improve to 24-3 overall and 13-0 in Southland play.
The victory ensures UCA of setting the school's season winning percentage record for the third straight year. The Sugar Bears also won the Southland East Division outright and needs just one more win to guarantee a share of the regular season overall title.
The Purple and Gray also set the school record for most sweeps in a year at 15.
UCA had an efficient offensive performance by hitting .280 with 44 kills. McNeese hit .141 and only had 28 kills. The Sugar Bears had their best performance in the third set by hitting .440 with 13 kills and just two errors.
Senior setter Robyn Smith hit three different milestones in the match, surpassing the 5,000 assists, 1,000 digs and 100 aces marks. The Lubbock, Texas native and UCA's career assists leader recorded 41 assists, giving her 5,026 in four seasons. She also served aces, moving her total to 101 and ninth place. Smith's three digs moved her to 1,001 for her career, becoming the 15 Sugar Bear to hit the millennium mark.
Junior right side hitter Chloe Smith led all players with 18 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker Taylor Hammonds added eight kills and hit .400. Sophomores Cristin Curl and Jessica Hays had 13 digs each.

Falcons Unable To Capitalize On Quick Start Against Miami Volleyball Women
Miami, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team was unable to build on a 25-17 win in the opening set of its Mid-American Conference match Thursday evening against Miami (Ohio) and the RedHawks battled back to defeat the Falcons 17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19.
Corey Domek posted 17 kills and 10 digs for her fourth career double-double and Shari Luther added 12 kills and three blocks, but Bowling Green was unable to shut down Miami’s offense as the match wore on.
The RedHawks had 10 attack errors in the first set but just 11 over the final three sets combined. Miami hit .000 in the opening set but improved to .320 and .312 in the next two and then an eye-popping .625 in the fourth, picking up 16 kills on 24 swings with just one error.
Bowling Green, on the other hand, hit a respectable .241 in the first and then did not reach the .200 mark again until the fourth set when the Falcons hit .320, but that was not enough to overcome Miami’s rhythm.
Bowling Green did have two more aces than Miami and added 8.0 team blocks, but the RedHawks had nine more digs than the Falcons and posted 11.0 team blocks.
Miami built a 12-10 lead in the opening set but Bowling Green bounced back with a 7-1 run sparked by three Luther kills. That stretch gave the Falcons the cushion they needed and the RedHawks never got closer than three point the rest of the way.
Bowling Green was never able to regain that momentum and Miami led most of the way in each of the final three sets.
Miami improves to 15-10 overall and 10-3 in MAC play with the win, while Bowling Green falls to 10-18 overall and 3-10 in league play. The Falcons finish the season with three consecutive home games beginning with a 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon match against Northern Illinois.
PEPPERDINE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL BEATS PORTLAND IN FOUR SETS
Click on the link below for a postmatch video interview with Pepperdine volleyball player Victoria Adelhelm:
MALIBU, Calif. – Dominating performances by middle blockers Victoria Adelhelm and Kim Hill lifted the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team to a 25-13, 21-25, 25-14, 25-13 victory over Portland in West Coast Conference play at Firestone Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.
Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .560 (17-3-25), and Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) had career highs of 16 kills and a .652 hitting percentage (16-1-23) while adding six blocks. The duo helped Pepperdine to a season-high .383 team hitting percentage.
Pepperdine (13-10, 6-4 WCC) kept Portland (5-19, 1-8) winless in Firestone Fieldhouse, where the Pilots are now 0-for-23 all-time. The Waves are 44-2 all-time against Portland.
Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) added 12 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) had 51 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) recorded nine kills and nine digs.
Freshman outside hitter Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) contributed five kills and 10 digs and sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) posted a team-high 15 digs.
“In the first set we served well and made very few errors,” Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthiessaid. “When we do that, our hitting percentage is high, our sideout percentage is high and we’re doing well. But in the second set we had more hitting and service errors, and basically gave up 10 points. In a game to 25, anything can happen when you do that. We work all week on eliminating errors, making the other team play, blocking and playing defense. We lost our concentration in the second set, but Portland served very well and got us out of system. We settled down and took charge in games three and four. The middles were great tonight, just unbelievable. Our seniors also kept us going.”
The Pilots, who hit .090 as a team, got 11 kills from Ariel Usher, seven kills and six blocks from Shelley Sievers and 20 digs from Danielle Dupar.
Trailing by just one at 6-5 in the first set, the Waves scored four straight points on kills by Grochmal and Frederick and two Pilot attack errors, and Pepperdine didn’t trail again. The Waves were up 13-11 and scored 12 of the final 14 points, including the last six. Hill had five kills in the set, including on three of the set’s final four points. Pepperdine outhit Portland, .400-.051.
The Waves led for the first half of the second set but couldn’t put the Pilots away. Pepperdine went up by as many as four points, first at 7-3 and later at 10-6, but Portland tied it up at 11-11. The Waves still led at 17-15 when Portland scored four straight points, which included a service ace by Kaylyn Jones, a kill by Usher and a block by Kate Bostwick and Sievers. The Waves tied it again at 19-19, but the Pilots notched three straight points and had six of the final eight in the set. Sievers had two kills and a block assist during the final stretch. Portland upped its hitting to .346 while Pepperdine’s fell to .273.
Pepperdine came out energized after the intermission and didn’t let up after scoring the first three points. The lead grew to 6-1, 8-2, 11-4, 14-6 and 19-7 before hitting its largest margin of 14 points at 24-10. Adelhelm, Grochmal and Hill each had four kills as the Waves had a .429-.030 hitting edge.
Adelhelm had a couple of early kills to help Pepperdine out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. Later, a 5-0 run a kill and a service ace by Fiers made the score 16-6 in the Waves’ favor. The Waves maintained their lead and had a .438-.000 hitting advantage in the set.
The Waves wrap up their home schedule on Saturday (Nov. 7) against Gonzaga at 1 p.m. Pepperdine’s two seniors, Fiers and Grochmal, will be honored prior to the match. After this weekend, three road matches remain in the regular season.

She pitched in an ace and two straight hitting errors locked up the 25-12 first set victory for TCU.
